Op-ed: Amid political turmoil, let’s not forget the human face of energy security

Welcome to 2025, and what a start it’s been.

Canada rang in the new year with political chaos. Earlier this month, the prime minister announced his resignation, triggering a leadership race and likely an election that will dominate headlines for months.

The turbulence began earlier when the finance minister resigned in December, just hours before delivering the Fall Economic Statement, meant to assure Canadians that the government has a firm grasp on economic challenges ahead.

These resignations have left our government in a state of flux at a time when we can ill afford uncertainty. Donald Trump has reignited economic tensions by threatening to use “economic force” to annex Canada. Geopolitical tensions grow more volatile and Canadians are concerned about the impacts.

As we enter this period of upheaval, one thing is clear: energy security must remain a national priority. Canada’s ability to ensure its residents have access to reliable, affordable power — particularly in the winter months — is critical to our future prosperity.
