WaterPower Canada Welcomes Federal Investment Tax Credits for Hydropower

Statement by Lorena Patterson, President and CEO of WaterPower Canada

November 4, 2025, Ottawa, ON – We welcome the federal government’s commitment to implementing the Clean Electricity Investment Tax Credits (ITCs) in Budget 2025 – a decisive step that will help Canada stay competitive and grow in the clean energy economy.

By making hydropower producers eligible for the Clean Electricity ITC, the government is recognizing our sector’s essential role as Canada’s renewable powerhouse, providing reliable, flexible energy that supports economic growth, stabilizes the grid, and attracts investment.  This commitment reflects an important acknowledgment of hydropower’s contribution to Canada’s energy security. We especially welcome the inclusion of all hydropower producers in the new tax credit, as well as the extended eligibility timeline.

As details emerge, we look forward to working with the federal government to ensure the credits unlock the full potential of Canada’s “big blue battery.” In particular, we encourage the government to broaden eligibility for refurbishment projects and explore more flexible financing options to support new and modernized hydropower across all regions.
