Hydropower Refurbishments and Redevelopments in Canada

WaterPower Canada is pleased to announce the release of its third report this summer:

Technical and Economic Potential Assessments: Hydropower Refurbishments and Redevelopments in Canada

This report was completed by Hatch and discusses opportunities to expand capacity and improve efficiency at existing hydropower facilities in Canada.

Key findings from the report include:

  • Canada’s total existing hydropower capacity is almost 83,000 MW produced by almost 600 generating stations.
  • Incremental generating capacity ranging from approximately 2,200 MW to approximately 5,400 MW could be achieved through upgrading existing facilities.
  • These upgrades are most attractive when they are combined with life extension investments at these plants.

Incremental capacity at these facilities would be beneficial for grid operators to meet peak demands on their systems, and incentives such as the Government of Canada’s recently announced Clean Electricity Investment Tax Credit provide an opportunity to fast track these projects.

WaterPower Canada is grateful to Energy and Natural Resources Canada for funding the completion of this report.
