New Federal Legislation Reinforces Future Demand Outlook for Clean and Renewable Energy Supply

WaterPower Canada welcomes the introduction of the Canadian Net-Zero Emissions Accountability Act today in the House of Commons. WaterPower Canada’s initial reading of the bill indicates that the Act will enshrine in law an accountability framework for the federal government to achieve Canada’s greenhouse gas emissions reductions targets. These legislated targets should increase the market certainty for future investments that increase the supply of clean and renewable energy.

There are shovel-ready projects to the tune of tens of billions of dollars that the waterpower sector is ready to invest in, if provided the appropriate market signals. These investments would increase Canada’s supply of clean and renewable energy, make our energy systems more reliable and resilient, while creating tens of thousands of new jobs each year during their engineering and construction” said Patrick Bateman, Interim President, WaterPower Canada. “The accountability framework legislation for climate policy goals tabled today in the House of Commons will be another important factor to guide power system planning and investment decision-making.”
