Industry-led day celebrates Canada’s clean energy backbone
Ottawa, ON, October 9, 2025 – On Thursday, Oct. 16, WaterPower Canada and partners across the country will mark the first Canadian Waterpower Day. This sector-led initiative highlights hydropower’s role in Canada’s past, present and future – from the inauguration of the Grand Chaudière Dam on Oct. 16, 1868, to hydropower’s central role in today’s clean energy transition.
Hydropower currently generates over 60 per cent of Canada’s electricity, making it the country’s largest source of renewable power. It is one of the most reliable and affordable forms of energy, supporting jobs, regional development and energy security while advancing economic reconciliation with Indigenous communities and enabling Canada’s path to net zero.
The City of Ottawa has proclaimed Oct. 16 as Canadian Waterpower Day.
